Creative Skills & Employment Initiatives

The Mighty Creatives are determined to create taccessible and inspiring pathways into creative employment - this includes practical ‘on-the-job’ skills being developed and young people directly contributing to the productivity and creativity of our most dynamic and fastest growing sector.

Between 2013 and 2016, we created quality workplace learning opportunities across the East Midlands by developing structured placements via programmes such as Creative Skills Initiative (see film below), and Apprenticeships and Internships. This also involved supporting wider employability skills development in Young People to help them thrive personally and professionally. This involved:

  • Demonstrating the diversity of roles and employment opportunities in the creative and cultural industries, helping young people access high quality work-based training routes, and inspiring them to seek a career in the sector.
  • Supporting employer organisations to create fantastic opportunities for young people, developing skills that can be harnessed to produce the next generation of local, regional and national talent.

We also offered a support programme for arts and cultural organisations based in the East Midlands interested in creating an Apprenticeship opportunity for local young people aged 16-24. This support included:

  • Securing and manageing through the creative employment programme wage subsidy grants of up to £2k
  • Brokerage with quality training providers and colleges to deliver the Apprenticeship qualifications recruitment support in partnership with training providers and colleges
  • Training workshops to support employer readiness for an apprentice including Coaching and Mentoring Training and HR-related processes
  • Peer-to-peer network for both employers and apprentices to share best practice and build new connections and partnerships.

Our experience and learning from this work enabled us to produce the Apprentice Employer Pack to help employers of businesses operating in the Creative and Cultural Industries (CCIs) to better understand apprenticeships.

Creative Skills Initiative 2013-16

Across 2013-2016, Creative & Cultural Skills delivered the multimillion pound Creative Employment Programme (CEP), on behalf of Arts Council England.

Over the course of three years, CEP has supported thousands of young people aged 16-24 to make their first steps into employment, through an apprenticeship or paid internship.

Alongside this, a £1 million investment from Creative & Cultural Skills to the Creative Skills Initiative has enabled hundreds of young people to gain basic skills, experience, qualifications and confidence, taking them one step closer to working in the creative and cultural industries.
